The models of drilling rigs continue to adapt to market changes. The boom in the oil and gas industry has prompted many contractors to add medium and large rigs. Moreover, the demand for large rigs has expanded beyond the energy industry. In the construction of various pressure pipelines such as water supply pipelines, horizontal directional drilling has become a common construction method. Even in the construction of gravity pipelines, the use of horizontal directional drilling rigs is increasing.

In general, the horizontal directional drilling industry is developing towards good market conditions. In order to improve construction efficiency and adapt to different application conditions, the need for large drag force and torque will help the development of medium-sized drilling rigs. Although small drilling rigs (with a pullback force of 22.5 tons or less) still account for the largest share (60.6%) of in-use drilling rigs, their share is decreasing year by year. On the other hand, the share of medium-sized drilling rigs (with pullback force between 22.5 and 45 tons) has risen to 30.2% from 27.2% a year ago. The share of large drilling rigs (with a drag force of 45 tons or more) has also increased from 8.1% in 2012 to 9.2% at present.
