Although there are some subtle changes in market share, the market composition of horizontal directional drilling is basically similar to the past two years. For example, since the stimulus package for the telecom industry ended in 2012, its market share has declined, from 25% last year to 22.6%, but it still holds the largest share.
The market share of horizontal directional drilling in gas pipeline construction has also declined (from 21.1% to 19.7%). The real estate and manufacturing depression in the past few years has just picked up. If the economy recovers, the laying of gas pipelines will increase in the next few years. The market share of long-distance oil and gas pipeline construction also decreased from 12.5% to 12.2%.
The market share of water supply and drainage pipelines and power cable construction has increased steadily, from 15.5%, 8.7% and 13.3% to 16.2%, 9.1% and 14.7% respectively. At present, horizontal directional drilling has been widely regarded as a feasible construction method in the laying of water supply pipelines. Although high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipes are commonly used because they can be welded into long pipes that are conducive to dragging, polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipes have also made great progress in weldability. Since the joint of ductile iron pipe is suitable for horizontal directional drilling construction, it is also another common pipe material for water supply pipeline. All these developments will help make horizontal directional drilling a key construction technology for water supply pipeline laying in the future.
